Free Consultation vs. Evaluation: Which Appointment Is Right for You?

If you're considering speech therapy or gender-affirming voice therapy, one of the most common questions we hear is:
"Should I schedule the free consultation first, or should I go straight to an evaluation?"
The answer depends on where you are in your decision-making process—and there's no pressure either way.
Some people already know they're ready to begin therapy. Others simply want the opportunity to meet a clinician and ask a few questions before getting started. Here's how each option works.
What Is an Evaluation?
An evaluation is the first clinical step in therapy.
During this appointment, your speech-language pathologist will take time to learn about you, your communication needs, and the goals that brought you to our practice. Depending on your concerns, your clinician may complete standardized assessments, informal observations, or voice measures to better understand your strengths and challenges.
By the end of your evaluation, you'll have:
A clear understanding of your current communication or voice profile
An individualized treatment plan
Recommendations for therapy frequency
Answers to questions specific to your situation
A roadmap for moving toward your goals
For clients seeking gender-affirming voice therapy, we'll discuss the aspects of your voice that are most important to you—such as resonance, vocal weight, pitch, communication style, and the situations where you want your voice to feel most authentic.
For clients seeking therapy for voice disorders, neurological conditions, speech, language, or cognitive-communication concerns, your evaluation helps us determine the most effective approach for your individual needs.
What Is a Free Consultation?
Our complimentary consultation is a 15-minute conversation with one of our speech-language pathologists.
It isn't a clinical evaluation, so we don't complete testing, provide diagnoses, or begin treatment during this appointment.
Instead, consultations are designed to help you decide whether our practice is the right fit for you.
Many people use a consultation to:
Meet their clinician by phone before committing
Learn about our therapy approach
Ask general questions about the therapy process
Discuss their goals at a high level
If you're comparing different practices or simply want to get to know us first, a consultation can be a great option.
Which Option Fits You Best?
You may prefer an evaluation if you...
Already know you'd like to work with us.
Feel ready to begin working toward your goals.
Want personalized recommendations based on your specific situation.
You may prefer a free consultation if you...
Are deciding between multiple practices.
Would like to meet your clinician before scheduling therapy.
Have general questions that would help you decide whether therapy is right for you.
Neither option is the "right" answer for everyone—it simply depends on where you are in your decision-making process.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't have any questions yet?
That's completely okay—and it's actually quite common.
If you already know you'd like to begin therapy, there's no need to schedule a consultation first. Your evaluation is where we'll learn about your goals, answer questions that relate specifically to your situation, and create your personalized treatment plan.
Can you give me personalized tips or advice during the consultation?
No. Because the consultation isn't a clinical evaluation, we aren't able to provide individualized therapy recommendations, exercises, or treatment advice. Those recommendations are made during your evaluation after your clinician has had the opportunity to learn more about your specific needs.
Will I receive recommendations during the consultation?
We'll gladly answer general questions about our services and therapy process.
Because a consultation isn't a clinical assessment, individualized recommendations are typically provided during your evaluation after your clinician has had the opportunity to learn more about your specific needs.
Can you tell me how long therapy will take?
This is one of our most frequently asked questions!
The honest answer is that every person is different. Progress depends on many factors, including your goals, diagnosis, consistency with therapy, and practice between sessions.
Your clinician will discuss realistic expectations during your evaluation and continue adjusting your treatment plan as you make progress.
(We're working on a dedicated blog article that explains this in more detail!)
Can my clinician tell me whether my insurance will cover therapy?
No. Our clinicians don't handle insurance benefits or billing. Instead, our administrative team verifies your insurance coverage and provides a personalized cost estimate before your first appointment, so your clinician can focus entirely on your care.
What if I decide to move forward after my consultation?
Wonderful!
We'll simply schedule your evaluation, which is the first clinical step before beginning therapy.
